Stephen Decatur is a name you may not hear, in fact, I didn’t become aware of his name or status until looking at information related to writing this blog. Stephen was born in 1779 and gained notariety in the Barbary wars. These raged from 1801 to about 1805 and then again in 1815.

The background of this battle started shortly after the American Revolution when the treaty with France was officially broken and piracy began against the shipping industry of the United States.
This piracy was to serve their interests because: “It was written in their Koran, that all nations which had not acknowledged the Prophet were sinners, whom it was the right and duty of the faithful to plunder and enslave; and that every mussulman who was slain in this warfare was sure to go to paradise. He said, also, that the man who was the first to board a vessel had one slave over and above his share, and that when they sprang to the deck of an enemy’s ship, every sailor held a dagger in each hand and a third in his mouth; which usually struck such terror into the foe that they cried out for quarter at once. There was incentive to attack others for being simply not of the muslim faction. The muslims announced quite clearly that they were due wealth from anyone else from whom they could take it. (from above: “it was the right and duty of the faithful to plunder and enslave”.)
Our hero gained the notoriety of being the first hero of the United States post the Revolution. This was due to his taking a muslim ship and attacking and destroying an American ship that had run aground and was being used by the muslims as a gun battery. This act is noted in the Marine Hymn:
From the Halls of Montezuma,
To the shores of Tripoli;
We fight our country’s battles
In the air, on land, and sea;
First to fight for right and freedom
And to keep our honor clean:
We are proud to claim the title
Of United States Marine.
From here.
I want to note right now that we have been fighting muslims for over 200 years. They have claimed the right to piracy and slavery according to the koran and now we have crossed the line to provide official military sanction to the very philosophy that has sought our destruction for over two centuries.
“4. Handling. a. Clean gloves will be put on in full view of the detainees prior to handling. b. Two hands will be used at all times when handling the Koran in manner signaling respect and reverence. Care should be used so that the right hand is the primary one used to manipulate any part of the Koran due to the cultural association with the left hand. Handle the Koran as if it were a fragile piece of delicate art. c. Ensure that the Koran is not placed in offensive areas such as the floor, near the toilet or sink, near the feet, or dirty/wet areas.”
From here.
Contrast this with the position of military treatment of the Bible which contains the philosophy guiding the foundation of this country.
Troops at posts in war zones are required to burn their trash, Wright said
Instead of sending the Bibles back to the church the military officials chose to burn the Bibles, stating that if they sent the Bibles back to the church they feared the church would turn around and send them to another organization within Afghanistan.
Apparently, the chaplain burned the Bibles with the camp’s daily garbage.
There are more links, but I believe the point is made. The philosophy advocating piracy and enslavement which we have fought for over two hundred years is treated with gloved hands, and the philosophy founding the greatest country in the world is burned with the trash.
Incensed? That doesn’t come close. It took me over a week to calm down enough to write this coherently.
Just look at the country’s history to see what a difference has been forced on us in the past five decades or so. The present political climate is the opposite of the founding concepts.
Now, I’m feeling towards rant mode, so I’ll stop.
