As a nurse, I have used the term PRN multiples of times. Hundreds of times. Thousands of times. I’ll stop there as it sounds like I’m adding years. For those not in the medical field, it simply means to take when necessary, or within certain limits as example: ibuprofen 800 mg po q6h prn pain – translated ibuprofen 800 miligrams every 6 hours as needed for pain. This evening, it struck me that for all these thousands of times, I have been using an acronym for which I didn’t know the meaning. A quick search produced:
