Beyond this specific example of doing another end run around the Constitution and other generally accepted rules for governing America stands something larger. If we ask “what historical precedents are there for a national leader coming to power using the accepted rules, but once in power ignoring those rules with increasing frequency?” then we get unpleasant answers.

That’s not to say that the U.S. is doomed to follow any grim precedents but on a chilly morning it’s a circumstance that’s way less comforting than long underwear.
