We watched this piece the other day and I noted the talent of a particular actor – Oscar Levant. This morning I looked up a bio on him and found quite a character. He was a child prodigy and also had mental issues. They are detailed here. One that caught my attention was: “schizophrenia beats dining alone.” The other thing that struck me was the combination of ability and mental issues that underscored the concept that the higher the creativity, the more mental issues there are. Reading his bio made arguing against that concept rather difficult.

I saw this idea on a blog and forget where. The item below stated something like: muslim shoots up a NRA convention. With that in mind, I was thinking of other never-to-exist headlines. Here we go:
Liberal Federal Judge begins to rule conservatively according to the Constitution and rule of Law – must be a closet conservative.
muslim cleric advocates freedom of religion and supports Baptist and Catholic churches in Saudi Arabia

Modern Art teacher states that “modern art” is nothing more than a cover of the inability of artists to accurately portray real life and forces interpretation on the viewer lowering the expectations on the abilities of the artist.
Nanci Pelosi offers to pay back tax payers for all the excesses she has charged over her tenure.
The Department of Justice has admitted to being required to follow the rule of law and as such has filed charges against the Black Pathers, Pelosi, Obama, Clinton, Sharpton, etc.

NIB (me, on the phone): I see you have a requested a refill for Shake-no-more.
Mrs. No Listen: Yes, I am out and it’s not really working well.
NIB: How are you taking it?
Mrs. No Listen: I was told three a day and am taking once a day.
NIB: The directions say take one three times per day. This is how you get up to the dose….
(If your medicine isn’t working, maybe try taking it according to directions. Just saying.)

I wanted to thank you for your concern and preemptive issuance of a flood advisory for this area. We had a discussion at work and found one small problem with the warning. Doesn’t a flood require water? We had just enough to get the windshield wet. I am of the belief that a flood requires a bit more clear substance than that. Just saying.

I know it’s been a bit since I have been here. I just haven’t felt that there were 20 minutes free to post. I had a couple of ideas and one in particular I wanted to work on Monday, but there were things requiring attention. So…spouseinbox and I have finished a Kairos weekend. For those unfamiliar with the Kairos ministry, it presents the love of God to prisoners. It is nondenominational and we have representatives present from Methodist, Catholic, Brethern, etc. all united in sharing with the prisoners. The time required is quite respectable and the results are as well.
As for Monday, it was Columbus day. The governmental positions were able to have a holiday and the private sector which supports them worked. I saw a reference to Columbus landing and interrupting the land loving practices of human sacrifice, etc. I remember a class in college where this act was described as someone simply filling out their itinerary and receiving incredible credit that was not due, as the Vikings were here previously. I have considered that and realize the folly of the argument. Don’t all of us that work maintain our hours? Don’t we work will full intent of receiving credit for our labors? To what does the term “Flat earth Society” refer? Was not that the time when the “consensus” of scientists considered the earth flat? Columbus set out with his life on the line to prove the conventional wisdom wrong. He had a wooden ship of about 90 feet in length to hold enough supplies to get him across the ocean. There was no GPS, no satellite tracking, no radio to call, no one else around – granted they went as three, but that was it. Think about traveling somewhere that is unknown with no map and only a belief to guide. One would have to choose between madman and courage as descriptors.
He had the support of the King Ferdinand of Spain as to the provisions and sold his idea to royalty. I can picture this sale being similar to those noting the practical problem with global warming, being held with derision, and still approaching congress to make the sale. His actual purpose is described here. It was a combination of two – finding a trade route to India, and spreading the Gospel. Would that be why there is such disdain for Columbus now? He actually had a religious background. How dare someone have a spiritual belief and act upon it!
I honor Columbus because of what he did. He faced the unknown on belief, put his life on the line for that belief and then propagated Christianity to a new portion of the globe. The religious freedom set up here created the greatest society on Earth and note that the diminishing of this nation is in accord with its removal of Christianity from the public sphere. After all, from the government’s perspective, if there is a population of individuals who are self governed and behave in a proper manner, the need for an overreaching government is not there. They then have to create that need.

I was scanning the web and found this tidbit. (Thanks bussorah.wordpress.com for the link). I as reminded of something much earlier in my life. I used to work for a car company in the midwest. Our company did their best to maintain quality, though we had our reservations about safety – but that’s a topic for another time. Anyways, a lady came to church and found out that I worked at this company and noted that her brother was an engineer at an American car company – which shall remain nameless, though you may guess at the description. The lady described her brother’s job as being assigned to make paint last five years. I mentioned that was a decent longevity and the lady corrected my initial impression. It was not to make it maintain for five years, but to last ONLY five years. They wanted the paint to deteriorate at the five year mark as that was considered the end of the car payments, and believed the customer needed incentive to purchase another car. My impression is that this is the behavior of a company viewing their customers as a pocketbook from which they get to remove proceeds, not an individual which they serve.
Mom and dad had a refrigerator which they had purchased after marriage, and passed off to a relative when our family outgrew it. As far as we knew, it was running 20 years later. Guess what model/company they were seeking when a new one was desired? The company was no longer there, so we had to take another brand which survived 1 year past the warrantee. At that rate, there was no brand loyalty – guaranteed.

Disney tends to destroy the stories they adopt, and this one was no exception. My curiosity in this was sparked by a fellow student who stated she had red the story – the original story – and it “tore her up.” I have considered the subject of love in modern movies, etc and believe that the characteristics involving love, in the deeper sense, have all been removed. There is only self-indulgence. Culturally speaking, how has this played out with abortion? Prior to that ability, a woman had to consider with whom she had sex, because the responsibility of care for the offspring was a consideration. There was a consequence to sex and families were the natural result of defining that activity in a positive way. I’m not saying all families are positive. Culturally speaking, having a family placed the activities of sex in appropriate bounds and the focus of family was to the group. Now that contraception and abortion are readily available, there is not the bound of family and need to focus on the group for one to try and satisfy their personal desires. Hence, the presentation of “love” has become personal gratification with no focus on the group – couple in this example. One rock song describes it as, “behind the shady trees, …. let me do as I please.” Is there a better description of using someone?
The Little Mermaid as Disney presented was a flighty, wanting to be big mermaid who sees a handsome prince, violates her father’s command and sees the sea witch to become human. No mention of pain there. Infatuation is noted. As the story progresses, the animals get into the act of trying to get the prince to love the quiet little mermaid. In proving that Disney has no clue about a king, they have her father give up his kingdom to try and save her only to have the prince fight the witch, stab her with the bow of the ship and the king gets his form and kingdom returned at which point he announces that the little mermaid really loves him and gives her legs. The actual story is a bit darker.
I have pulled a sumary and story of the Little Mermaid here and here. Note that though the beginning has some relation to the Disney story, from the meeting with the sea witch, the actual story takes on quite a different light. The mermaid doesn’t simply lose her voice, she has her tongue cut out. Next, she is promised that every step would be as if walking on broken glass. The goal of this has a couple of components: she has to win the love of her obsession, and in doing so, she gets a soul and can go to heaven. There is a component of self interest introduced into the youthful desire for her obsession. In a wider sense, love isn’t simply self-focused or only other-focused. There are components of both. The story I linked expresses it as: “while she dreamed of human happiness and an immortal soul.” Can anyone find that quality in Disney? The conflict with the love of the mermaid for the prince is brought to a head when the prince marries the princess from the other country. At this point, all the sacrifice she has made has an end point. When offered the opportunity of placing her interests above the interests of the one she loved, she chose his interests. There is a surprise ending where the mermaid is given another chance at the soul desired and rises as a spirit in the wind. Taken in the practical sense, self interest can be met, but it requires long sacrifice, and as the story presents, there is still caring for others required for that self-interest. Note that the self-interest probation period is relative to the behavior of others.
Of course, the wind spirits and mermaids are all fanciful creations, but I wanted to utilize them to point out the change in media culture – from a complex interrelated acknowledgement of love, interaction, choice and loss, to a self-obsessed shallow false presentation of love and authority. How much sacrifice is one going to spend for love? For Disney, not much. For the original story, everything. In real life, there is real sacrifice for love.
